Wherever you are in the process of SBCC, there are principles that can keep you on the right track. We feature ten such principles here. As you work through the C-Change planning steps, these principles can be your compass, especially when faced with challenges and tough decisions.
Principle #1: Follow a systematic approach
Principle #2: Use research (not assumptions) to drive your program
Principle #3: Consider the social context
Principle #4: Keep the focus on your audience/s
Principle #5: Use theories and models to guide decisions
Principle #6: Involve partners and communities throughout
Principle #7: Set realistic objectives and consider cost effectiveness
Principle #8: Use mutually reinforcing channels, activities, and materials at many levels
Principle #9: Choose strategies that are motivational and action-oriented
Principle #10: Demand quality at every step
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit, you will be able to:
Identify which of "10 principles of SBCC" need to be incorporated (or improved) in your work.
As indicated on the Module home page, the Challenge is the central position or issue to be submitted to the community site, often presented as a real-life scenario.
Challenge Assignment
Revisit the two scenarios about Thandi and Joe that we discussed in Unit 2. Select one scenario.
Next, imagine you have been asked to create an HIV and AIDS SBCC project to address the issues that the scenario highlights. These include multiple concurrent partnerships, age-disparate sex, and transactional sex. Combining the information from the scenario as well the information from our discussion of the scenario in unit 2, consider each of the 10 principles of SBCC.
In a short posting to the discussion area, describe how you would uphold one or two principles (you can discuss more if you choose) for your selected scenario. For example for Scenario 1 (Thandi) you might uphold Principle 2 (use of research to drive your program) by engaging in qualitative research to understand what motivates Thandi to engage in age-disparate transactional sex that may put her at high risk for HIV infection. Highlight how this information would assist you in planning your SBCC project.
You'll find a link to discussion posts for this unit at the bottom of the page.
OPTIONAL discussion questions on the "10 principles of SBCC." In the "activities" discussion area, please answer at least ONE of the following questions, and then respond to, or comment on the posting of, at least ONE fellow participant.
Which of these principles speaks most loudly to you (do you find most important/relevant) and why?
Which of these principles do you feel is most neglected in your (or other) SBCC projects?
Where have you seen these principles applied and with what results?
Are there any other principles you feel should be added?
You'll find a link to discussion posts for this unit at the bottom of the page.
Which aspects of this module have been most useful to you and why? Please also share ideas on how you intend to incorporate what you have learned in this module in your SBCC work.
